Waste-Free Dayton announces community compost station at 2nd Street Market
Waste-Free Dayton has announced the launch of its second community compost station, hosted in collaboration with Five Rivers MetroParks’ 2nd Street Market.
As part of Waste-Free Dayton’s ongoing commitment to creating a healthier and more sustainable future, it has established this community compost station to provide an easily accessible and convenient solution for residents looking to reduce their environmental footprint.
The compost station, located at 2nd Street Market and serviced by GoZERO, will accept a wide range of organic waste, including kitchen scraps, soiled and non-coated paper products, and other compostable materials. This initiative aims to divert organic waste from landfills, reduce emissions and promote the production of nutrient-dense compost that can be used to enrich soil and contribute to a healthier environment.
“Opening up a compost station at 2nd Street Market has been kind of a dream of ours, after seeing similar endeavors done in other cities,” said Waste-Free Dayton cofounder and executive Director Natalie Warrick.
“With hundreds of people coming through 2nd Street Market every weekend, we believe that the compost station could become a popular addition to the great things they are already doing. We appreciate our relationship with GoZERO and are grateful they can compost different types of organic material–which is fantastic because I recently learned from the EPA that almost half of what we put in landfills could be composted! Since reducing waste is one of our focus areas for Waste-Free Dayton, we will keep educating the community about how to reduce food waste and encourage them to compost spoiled food.”
The Waste-Free Dayton community compost station is currently open to the public. Residents are encouraged to register first on Waste-Free Dayton’s website at www.wastefreedayton.org.
“The 2nd Street Market is proud to be one of the community compost locations for the GoZERO public composting location in partnership with Waste-Free Dayton,” Market Manager Lynda Suda said. “This opportunity aligns perfectly with Five Rivers MetroParks’ commitment to supporting sustainable living and conservation mission to protect the region’s national heritage.”
While this service is free to the community, donations to Waste-Free Dayton are appreciated and can made online by visiting www.wastefreedayton.org.
