Upcoming Programs to Help Prepare for Gardening Season

If you want a flourishing garden this spring and summer, winter is the time to start planning and prepping. Not sure where to start? MetroParks offers numerous programs to help liven up your landscape, with a focus on sustainable gardening methods.  

The Landscape Design for Every Space program will be held at Cox Arboretum MetroPark on Saturday, January 20, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to select and place plants in any space they have, including small yards or patios.  

Winter is the perfect time to plan your vegetable garden, too. An in-depth Vegetable Garden Boot Camp will be held at Cox Arboretum MetroPark on Saturday, February 3, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will learn planning and planting tips, maintenance guidelines, and how to get and keep your garden growing and productive throughout the season.  

Join MetroParks staff at the 2nd Street Market for an information session on how to Get Your Potted Plants Ready for Spring on Friday, February 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Betty Hoevel, Five Rivers MetroParks education coordinator, will answer questions and show participants how to prepare potted plants for spring.

Flower Garden Boot Camp will be held at Cox Arboretum MetroPark on Saturday, February 10, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This program focuses on planning for a beautiful ornamental garden, selecting plants and tips for maintenance of both mature and new landscapes., Plus, the program covers new trends in perennials and annuals.  

An Early Spring Witch Hazel Walk will be led by witch hazel expert Ron Schilb on Saturday, February 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroParks. Come explore the collection of blooming spring varieties and learn how to use and maintain these plants in your own landscape.
