Squeeze in some service in the great outdoors this summer

Last spring, 241 volunteers gathered to participate in Adopt-A-Park, MetroParks’ single largest day of service each year. Volunteers participated in 22 projects in 16 MetroParks locations and served a total of 617 hours.

During the event – presented by the CenterPoint Energy Foundation – hundreds of pounds of waste was collected, 100 pounds of which was able to be recycled. Additionally, more than 750 trees and shrubs were planted and 3.7 acres of invasive species were removed.

Service days, such as Adopt-A-Park are integral to helping MetroParks protect the region’s natural heritage. To expand volunteer opportunities to those who have limited time during the week, MetroParks offers Service Saturdays. Service Saturdays are every third Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. to noon at different MetroParks locations.

During Service Saturdays, volunteers participate in a variety of projects, from gardening to invasive species removal, all of which help support our staffs’ efforts to keep the parks beautiful and its habitats thriving.
