Our Favorite Fall Pumpkins and Squash

Picking out pumpkins and decorative squash is a fun way to celebrate the beauty and variety of the vegetables that this season provides. There are so many shapes and colors and lumps and bumps! Many of the squash grown for decoration are dual purpose- they’re pretty, delicious, and depending on the variety, can be stored long into the winter season. And don’t forget- squash seeds are delicious when tossed with some seasoning and olive oil and roasted!  

Here are a few of our staff favorite squash varieties; let us know what you end up trying!

Cinderella/Fairytale pumpkin

Excellent for sweet or savory use! Try these cooked and pureed into a curried soup or make a sweet dessert with brown sugar, cooked pumpkin, warming spices and pecans.

Peanut pumpkin

The more warts this has, the higher the sugar content! If you pick the wartiest peanut pumpkin you can find, you’ll be able to make some excellent from-scratch pumpkin pies and sweet desserts.

Acorn squash

Scoop out the seeds and stuff this squash with an herbed wild rice pilaf with mixed root veggies for a wonderful autumn meal.

Blue hubbard squash

Try this delicious squash roasted with some sage, thyme, or rosemary, or make a comforting fall stew.
