Celebrate Black History Month with 2nd Street Market vendors

Starting this Sunday, the 2nd Street Market is offering three workshops led by the proprietors of some of the Black-owned businesses located at the Market. These all-ages workshops are being held in honor of Black History Month.

Akola African Beading Class with Ninjtaro Jewelry:  Sunday, Feb. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“Akola” means “she works” in a local Ugandan dialect, and Akola beads symbolize the enduring strength of women. The technique involved in creating each piece can be as unique as the wearer itself, with each handcrafted with sustainable materials. Ninjtaro Jewelry owner Charme Austin will lead this traditional African beading class. A proceed of each sale goes toward creating jobs and furthering the education of women in Uganda. $40/person. DIY Vegan Cheezecake with Invoke: Friday, Feb. 18, from noon to 12:3- p.m.

Larry and Lester Gates own of one of the Market’s prepared food vendors, Invoke, which features vegan and other healthy options. Join the brothers as they share their secret about how to turn this beloved dessert into a healthier, guilt-free option. Learn how to make their recipe at home and enjoy a sample dessert afterward. DIY Candle Making: Friday, Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Candle-pouring experts from Wick Therapy Candle, Donna and Jhazlyn, will walk you through all the elements to consider when creating your new favorite candle. Whether the warmth of vanilla, sweetness of blueberries or even the relaxation of eucalyptus, they’ll guide you to create your unique blend. $25/person. You’ll find everything you need to prepare delicious and healthy meals, from dry goods to fresh produce to meats, cheeses and breads. Grab a meal from the many prepared food vendors, which will satisfy your sweet and savory cravings. Purchase artisan items, such as homemade soaps and jewelry, plants, and environmentally friendly products for the home. Parking is free. Shoppers currently are required to wear a face covering while inside the 2nd Street Market, per Five Rivers MetroParks’ COVID-19 safety protocols.
