Bike to work, catch pancakes and help the planet this May at RiverScape MetroPark

Five Rivers MetroParks invites the community to celebrate National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 19, during its annual Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast at RiverScape MetroPark, 237 E. Monument Ave.

From 7 to 9 p.m., hundreds of cycling enthusiasts will gather to enjoy a free, flying pancake breakfast, coffee, live music, cycling-related exhibitors, a photobooth and more during this celebration of human-powered transportation.

“Biking is a really great alternative to driving, both for your own health and the health of the environment,” said MetroParks sustainability manager Tim Pritchard. “Each time you opt to walk or bike to work, run an errand or meet friends, you are lessening your carbon footprint.”

The first 500 cyclists to pre-register their ride and check in at the Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast will receive a free gift from Five Rivers MetroParks. Participants can pre-register at metroparks.org/biketoworkday.

For those who don’t want to ride a considerable distance, participants are welcome to park their cars at a trail access area and ride to RiverScape MetroPark from a closer starting point.

In 2021, 172 cyclists biked 2,885 miles. Of the 175 registered riders who attended, 127 biked to work for the first time.

“The Dayton region is home to 350 miles of paved trails, the nation’s largest paved trail network,” said MetroParks outdoor recreation coordinator Jordan Hart. “Our community has a rich history of being a bike friendly region, which is beneficial for residents and an economic driver.”

Cycling enthusiasts are welcome to attend the Miami Valley Cycling Summit at the downtown Dayton Metro Library immediately following the Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., elected officials, government staff, local leaders and cycling advocates will hear from local officials, participate in breakout sessions, enjoy tours and more. Register at bikemiamivalley.org/cycling-summit-2023.

The Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast is presented by the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission.
