MetroParks: Your Nature Science Laboratory
The Importance of Nature Play

Most people don’t put the two together but many people don’t know how much chemistry there is in nature; for instance:
  • Did you know the acid produced by ants can dissolve substances as hard as stone?
  • Did you know that some crystals are made up of the same components you use to salt your food?
  • Did you know that the acid found in your stomach is one of the strongest acids on earth?
  • Did you know there was metal (iron) in your cereal?
  • Did you know that the pen cashiers use to identify fake money contains iodine?
  • What makes a skunk’s spray smell so bad? Sulfur!

To schedule a program at a park or to have a naturalist visit your class or group, please call us 3 to 4 weeks in advance at (937) 275-PARK. Teachers and other educators of all subjects and grade levels who would like to learn how to integrate environmental topics into their curriculum can participate in the many programs offered throughout the MetroParks. For more information about our programs, call (937) 275-PARK.
