Butterfly House Guides
Share information on life cycles, identification and butterfly gardening with visitors.

Open from late June through Labor Day.

2-hour shifts, Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 12 noon, noon – 2 pm and 2 – 4 pm. Sundays, 12 noon – 2 pm and 2 – 4 pm.

Corporate, Group & Scout Volunteers
Organized groups who wish to do some volunteer work for Five Rivers MetroParks are invited to contact us for specific opportunities. Depending on the park, work available is conservation in nature, specifically invasive plant removal, or includes grounds maintenance, land management, greenhouse production and special events.

Volunteers of all ages, from young children to seniors are invited to help us make our parks and river corridors healthier and friendlier place to visit.

Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt and a free lunch. MetroParks will also be providing gloves, and trash bags.

Garden Groups
Assist with planting, pruning, mulching and weeding in the various garden areas throughout Cox Arboretum. Learn the most effective techniques from talented horticulture staff and fellow volunteers. Garden Groups include: African Violets, Butterfly House, Herb Study Group, Monday Nighters, Ornamental Grasses, Rock Garden, , Stonewall Perennials, , Weekenders and Wildflowers.

MVP: MetroParks Volunteer Patrol
Volunteer while doing what you love by joining MetroParks Volunteer Patrols (MVPs). Join one of four patrols: Bike, Hike, Mountain Bike, or Horse. MVPs communicate information about trail conditions and foster positive public interactions.

Minimum of 50 hours per year

Must be proficient in the area you’ll be patrolling (hiking, biking, mountain biking, or horseback riding) and provide your own equipment (bike, helmet, horse, etc.)

Trees and Shrubs Group
Assist in the selection, propagation, and care of hardy trees and shrubs for Arboretum and MetroParks needs. Responsible for the maintenance and care of plants in the woody nursery.

Tour Guides (Adult)
Lead visitors through the Arboretum and help them explore, discover and learn about plants, nature and the unique aspects of the grounds.

April – Oct. Occasional tours occur in the winter.
|
6 hours per month during touring season.
|
No previous experience necessary. Orientation and introductory workshop offered before season begins. Garden specific and plant workshops held throughout the year.
|
Love of nature and sharing knowledge is important. Must be able to walk the grounds, or be able to pass a test to drive a tram or golf cart.

Tour Guides (Children)
Provide meaningful experiences outside the classroom through guided tours of the Arboretum or station-based tours, for students ranging from pre K – 7th grade.

Tours are in Spring (April – June) and Fall (Sept – Oct). Most tours occur on weekday mornings.
|
When volunteers begin touring, we ask for a commitment of 1 tour per week during the active season.
|
No previous experience necessary. Training and shadowing opportunities are provided. 2010 training will be March 15, 22 and 29 from 9:30 – 11:30 am. Alternative training times can also be arranged to fit your schedule.
|
Love of children and nature is important. If giving guided tours, must be able to walk the grounds.
