Available Opportunities

The Adventure Summit

The Adventure Summit is a joint production of Five Rivers MetroParks and Wright State University. Through inspiring presentations, hands on skill building session and adventure competitions the summit showcases Dayton, Ohio as the “Outdoor Adventure Capital of the Midwest.” The event takes place every other year in February.

Adopt-A-Park / Make A Difference Day

Each year Five Rivers MetroParks offers two large service events that help people of all ages and abilities get outside and give back to their parks. In April, Five Rivers MetroParks celebrates Earth Day by hosting Adopt-A-Park, an opportunity for volunteers to come out and support their parks and learn about the importance of conservation through service.

Similarly, in the fall, we celebrate National Make A Difference Day, a day where people across the country are encouraged to come together to support service projects throughout their communities. Each event helps our staff get prepared for the upcoming season, whether it’s anticipating a busy spring-summer or tidying up the parks before a slow cold winter. Gloves and trash bags and any necessary tools are provided

Explorer Program

The Explorer program is a career orientation and experience program for young people ages 14-20 who are interested in law enforcement careers or a related field. The program, operated by the Five Rivers MetroParks Ranger Department in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America, promotes personal growth through character development, respect for the rule of law, physical fitness, good citizenship and patriotism.

Bike to Work Day

400 – 750 cycling enthusiasts come together every May at RiverScape MetroPark for a free pancake breakfast and music at the region’s largest celebration of biking as a means of transportation in the Miami Valley!

Summer Music Series

The Summer Music Series takes place under the pavilion at RiverScape MetroPark with stunning views of Dayton and the Great Miami River. This concert series includes a full array of genres like Big Band, R&B, Soul, Rock, Latin, Indie, Americana, and more. Musicians are local or regional to Dayton and perform a mix of their own music and fan favorites.

Historically, 1,000 – 2,000 people attend each of these FREE performances. Two concerts are held in conjunction with downtown Dayton’s First Friday events in June and August and nine are held on various Thursday evenings June – August.

Summer Fitness at RiverScape

Fitness programs (yoga and Zumba) are held under the pavilion at RiverScape on Saturdays throughout the summer.

Growing for Good

The Growing for Good program addresses the ongoing challenge of food insecurity and inequitable access to fresh, healthy produce. MetroParks’ education coordinators assemble hundreds of Garden To-Go kits that include seeds, seed starts, instructions and garden bags. These kits allow recipients to spark an interest in gardening while starting their own gardens at home, in addition to enjoying the benefits of their harvest. Growing for Good helps address those in immediate need and provides them with the tools and resources required to support their future needs, all while connecting them with the natural world.

Small Farm & Food Fest

Five Rivers MetroParks hosts the Small Farm & Food Fest the first Saturday of August at Carriage Hill MetroPark. This free, all-ages event promotes healthy eating and sustainable living with dozens of hands-on activities, a pop-up farmers market, demonstrations, speakers and more. Small Farm & Food Fest offers a mix of modern-day and historical farming, gardening, homesteading and food preparation information. Festivalgoers also enjoy refreshments from local food vendors and live music!

MetroParks Trails Challenge

Starting Feb. 1 and running through Oct. 31, the MetroParks Trails Challenge features 28 trails for hiking, walking, cycling, paddling, running, mountain biking and even horseback riding. MetroParks are home to 160 miles of paved and natural surface trails, and the Dayton region is home to more than 340 miles of paved trails — the nation’s largest paved trail network — and 270 miles of river corridor. The Trails Challenge is a great way for the community to explore them while improving their physical and mental health. Participants also have the opportunity to win prizes based on the number of trails they complete!

Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience

15,000 – 25,000 visitors attend the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience, the Midwest’s premiere festival celebrating the outdoor lifestyle. This two-day event, held in the fall, features outdoor activities, an exhibitor village, competitions, music, a craft beer garden, food, camping and activity demos; it offers something for everyone, from the budding weekend warrior to the hardcore outdoor enthusiast.
