Celebrate Bike Month 2016

Bike to Work DayAnnually, May is designated as National Bike Month that includes National Bike to Work Week (May 16 - 20) and National Bike to Work Day (May 20).

As a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community, Dayton has a full slate of bicycle friendly events across the region to help you celebrate - the pinnacle of which is the National Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast at RiverScape MetroPark on May 20.


Whether you're a seasoned cycling commuter or a first time bike rider, unite with us to share the culture and the fun of biking through great regional cycling events!

Bike Bucks at the Market - Saturdays in May
To celebrate National Bike Month, the 2nd Street Market is offering Bike Bucks! Ride your bike to the Market on any Saturday in May and enter a drawing to win $50 in Market Money. Volunteers will be on hand to help you enter, and you are encouraged to enter every Saturday to increase your chances to win. While you're at the Market, a snapshot will be taken of you with your cool bike, and you can pick up practical information about bicycling in the Miami Valley.

Link Dayton Bike Share First Anniversary Celebration - May 5
Celebrate at RiverScape MetroPark from Noon - 1 PM with giveaways, music, bike month proclamation, and food trucks. The celebration will also kickoff a weekend of free rides!

Courteous Mass - May 6
Courteous Mass is a monthly street cycling ride in Dayton, Ohio! Come see the city from your bike; Come be seen on your bike. All are welcome: commuters, recreational cyclists, college students, hipsters, racers, riders, and families with children. Ride meets at the Fifth Third Field Plaza at 5:15 pm. Bike for the Health of It: Ride to Radvansky Bridge - May 7
Join MetroParks Volunteer Patrol on a bike ride, on the Stillwater River Bikeway (north). Meet at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark. Ride to Radvansky Ln Bridge, near Fishburg Road (16 miles), 9 AM - Noon, Registration requested, walk-ins welcome.

Trailside Repairs - May 11
This hands-on class will develop your ability to troubleshoot and repair common bicycle maintenance issues that occur on the trail. Topics covered include changing a flat and quick brake and shifter adjustments. You are encouraged to ride to the class. Registration required. Eastwood MetroPark. Fee: $5

Bike Sharing 101 - May 11
For adults that are interested but concerned about bicycling, have questions about bike sharing, and want to address common barriers to bicycling for transportation. 6 - 7 PM, hosted by Bike Miami Valley.

Centerville Bicycle Rodeo - May 21
The Centerville Police Department and Centerville Noon Optimists are partnering with Miami Valley Hospital South to host the Bicycle Rodeo 9 AM - noon, Saturday, May 21. Test cycling skills. Check bicycle helmet fit. Register bicycles against theft. Inspect bike maintenance. Meet McGruff the Crime Dog. Receive a new bicycle helmet, if needed. Participate in health and safety activities, giveaways and more. Children taking part in skills testing must bring a safe operational bicycle and wear a bicycle helmet. Bike for the Health of It: Ride to Verona - May 14
Join MetroParks MVPs for a bike ride, rain or shine, on the Wolf Creek Bikeway. Meet in the parking lot behind Rob's Restaurant, 705 Arlington Rd., in Brookville. Ride toward Verona (11 miles), 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

GO W/ THE FLOW - Bike Edition - May 16
Get your mind, body and soul ready for a week of bike riding with a FREE GO W/THE FLOW Vinyasa yoga class with live music at RiverScape MetroPark. Dayton area yoga instructor Tori Reynolds and local musician (and yogi) BJSR lead a unique, rhythmic fusion of yoga and music that's drawing rave reviews nationwide! Ride your bike and get a prize. No yoga experience? No problem! Power Vinyasa yoga is geared (pun intended) for all experience levels, and builds whole-body strength, flexibility and mental focus - the ultimate cross-training practice. LexisNexis Bike to Work Week (Employees Only) - May 16-20
LexisNexis employees and contractors, at the Miamisburg Ohio location, are encouraged to ride to work and record their mileage on its gREen Team intranet website. During Bike to Work Week, employees that log their miles are eligible for various prizes and invited to attend an ice cream social for all participants. For Bike to Work Day, there is an organized ride up to Five Rivers Metro Parks Pancake Breakfast. Separate from Bike to Work Week, LexisNexis supports bike riders by having monthly prize drawings and contest for bike tune ups. Bicycle Commuting - May 17
This lecture-style class, provided by Five Rivers MetroParks, will cover bike selection, commuting equipment, and trip preparation. Briefly discuss traffic laws, hazards encountered, safe-riding skills and proper route planning. Registration required. Fee $5.

Wright State University Bike to Campus Breakfast (Students and Employees Only) - Wednesday, May 18, 7 - 9 AM
Join the Departments of Campus Recreation, Parking and Transportation and The Office of Sustainability in celebrating May as National Bike Month. Wright State will join in the festivities happening around the Miami Valley by hosting a Bike to Campus Breakfast on Wednesday, May 15th. Ride your bike to the front entrance of the Student Union between 7 and 9 AM; you will be greeted by bike racks and volunteers. Once you park, you will receive a raffle ticket. Turn in your ticket downstairs in the Atrium for a Free breakfast. Please bike safe and wear a helmet. Preregistration is not required.

Wegerzyn Bike Rodeo for Kids - Sat. May 21
Join the MetroParks' Rangers and MVPs for a day of bicycle safety. Bring your two-wheeled bicycle (with or without training wheels) for a bicycle course. Receive a free bike helmet, property fitted (while quantitates last) (no beads in hair, please). The bicycle course teaches students the rules of the road. Event is 9 AM - Noon. Supported by Dayton Children's Hospital and Safe Kids of Dayton. Registration requested, walk-ins welcome.

Five Rivers MetroParks' Bike To Work Day Pancake Breakfast - May 20, RiverScape MetroPark, 7 - 9 AM
Leave your car in the garage and support National Bike to Work Day. Ride in on your own or with a group to RiverScape MetroPark for a free pancake breakfast then head to work. Live music, cycling related exhibitors and team challenge are also part of the fun. Turn this one day into a lifestyle.

University of Dayton, Bike to Work Day Team Challenge - May 20
Join fellow UD faculty, staff and students for Bike to Work Day, May 20, 2016. You don't need your own bike to participate; RecBikes can be reserved regardless of Campus recreation membership. All are invited, and all events are free. Registration appreciated.

Bike for the Health of It: Ride to Island MetroPark - May 21
Join MetroParks MVPs for a bike ride on the Great Miami River Bikeway. Meet in the parking lot of Rip Rap Park, at the intersections of Little York, Rip Rap and Taylorsville roads. (16 miles) All Ages Welcome. 9 AM - Noon

Bike to the Dragons - May 22
Hop on your bike with the family and head downtown to watch America's favorite pastime. The first 50 cyclists to register on the Dragon's Website and "Bike to the Game" will win complimentary lawn seats and a pack of prizes courtesy of Five Rivers MetroParks, Dayton Dragons, and the Miami Valley Regional Planning Committee. Valet Bike Parking will be available for those who Bike to the Dragons starting at 1 PM. Game time is 2 PM. Bicycles must be claimed no later than 30 minutes after the last pitch. Join MetroParks MVPs for a bike ride on the Mad River Bikeway. Meet at Eastwood MetroPark, last parking lot, 1385 Harshman Rd. (9 miles), 9 -11 AM.

Miamisburg River Ride - June 4
Grab your bike and hop on the Great Miami River Bikeway. Riders will begin at Miamisburg at Riverfront Park, 3 N. Miami Ave. and head south to Franklin, 14 miles round trip. Along the way, enjoy Great Miami River vistas, shady parks, provided refreshments and historic points of interest. Win sweet prizes, get a bike helmet (while supplies last) and have a great time!
