Celebrate Bike Month 2015

Bike to Work DayAnnually, May is designated as National Bike Month that includes National Bike to Work Week (May 11 - 15) and National Bike to Work Day (May 15).

As a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community, Dayton has a full slate of bicycle friendly events across the region to help you celebrate - the pinnacle of which is the National Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast at RiverScape MetroPark on May 15.


Whether you're a seasoned cycling commuter or a first time bike rider, unite with us to share the culture and the fun of biking through one or multiple of these great regional cycling events!

Fundamentals of Bicycle Touring - April 30
Intro to Bicycle Touring gives you the knowledge needed to get started with bicycle touring. This lecture-style class will cover touring equipment for your bike, clothing options, types of tours and tour planning. Join us as we discover the joy of bicycle touring while on the trail, path or road. Registration required. Fee $5.

Bike Bucks at the Market - Saturdays in May
To celebrate National Bike Month, the 2nd Street Market is offering Bike Bucks! Ride your bike to the Market on any Saturday in May and enter a drawing to win $50 in Market Money. Volunteers will be on hand to help you enter, and you are encouraged to enter every Saturday to increase your chances to win. While you're at the Market, a snapshot will be taken of you with your cool bike, and you can pick up practical information about bicycling in the Miami Valley.

Courteous Mass - May 1
Courteous Mass is a monthly street cycling ride in Dayton, Ohio! Come see the city from your bike; Come be seen on your bike. All are welcome: commuters, recreational cyclists, college students, hipsters, racers, riders, and families with children. Ride meets at the Fifth Third Field Plaza at 5:15 pm. Helmets and lights strongly encouraged. Find out more at

Bike for the Health of It: Ride to Kyle Park - May 2
Join MetroParks Volunteer Patrol a bike ride, rain or shine, on the Great Miami River Bikeway (north). Meet in the parking lot at Rip Rap Park, at the intersections of Little York, Rip Rap and Taylorsville roads. We will ride to Kyle Park (16 miles). 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Fundamentals of Bicycle Commuting - May 6
This lecture-style class will cover bike terminology, commuting equipment, and trip and bike preparation. We will briefly discuss traffic laws, hazards encountered, safe-riding skills and proper route planning. Registration required. Fee $5.

Wegerzyn Bike Rodeo - Sat. May 9, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Join the MetroParks Ranger Division on a ride through a safety course, and have your bikes checked out by a technician. Before riding students are encouraged to have their helmets properly fitted to their heads. New helmets will be available on an as-needed bases (no beads in hair please). Bike for the Health of It: Ride to Radvansky Bridge - May 9
Join MetroParks Volunteer Patrol on a bike ride, on the Stillwater River Bikeway (north). Meet at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark: Parking Lot1301 East Siebenthaler Ave., Dayton, OH 45414. We will ride to Radvansky Ln Bridge, near Fishburg Road (16 miles), 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

LexisNexis Bike to Work Week (Employees Only) - May 11-15
LexisNexis employees and contractors, at the Miamisburg Ohio location, are encouraged to ride to work and record their mileage on its gREen Team intranet website. During Bike to Work Week, employees that log their miles are eligible for various prizes and invited to attend an ice cream social for all participants.  For Bike to Work Day, there is an organized ride up to Five Rivers Metro Parks Pancake Breakfast. Separate from Bike to Work Week, LexisNexis supports bike riders by having monthly prize drawings and contest for bike tune ups. University of Dayton Fly Ride (Staff and Students only) - TBD

GO W/ THE FLOW - Bike Edition - May 12
Get your mind, body and soul ready for a week of bike riding with a FREE GO W/THE FLOW Yoga Class. Bring your mat. Ride your bike. Kick off National Bike Week with an invigorating Vinyasa yoga class with live music at Riverscape MetroPark. Dayton area yoga instructor Tori Reynolds and local musician (and yogi) BJSR have created GO W/ THE FLOW, a unique, rhythmic fusion of yoga and music that's drawing rave reviews nationwide! No yoga experience? No problem! Power Vinyasa yoga is geared (pun intended) for all experience levels, and builds whole-body strength, flexibility and mental focus - the ultimate cross-training practice. Wright Patt Air Force Base - Bike to Work Day - May 13, 6:30 - 8:30 AM (employees only)
Join fellow cycling enthusiasts at the "20th Annual WPAFB Bike to Work Day!" Celebrate the oldest bike to work day event in the Miami Valley with breakfast exhibitors and more. Base personnel only.

Wright State University Bike to Campus Breakfast (Students and Employees Only) - Wednesday, May 13, 7:00 - 9:00 AM
Join the Departments of Campus Recreation, Parking and Transportation and The Office of Sustainability in celebrating May as National Bike Month. Wright State will join in the festivities happening around the Miami Valley by hosting a Bike to Campus Breakfast on Wednesday, May 13th. Ride your bike to the front entrance of the Student Union between 7:00am and 9:00am; you will be greeted by bike racks and volunteers. Once you park, you will receive a raffle ticket. Turn in your ticket downstairs in the Atrium for a Free breakfast. Please bike safe and wear a helmet. Preregistration is not required.

Five Rivers MetroParks' Bike To Work Day Pancake Breakfast - May 15, RiverScape MetroPark, 7:00 - 9:00 AM
Leave your car in the garage and support National Bike to Work Day. Ride in on your own or with a group to RiverScape MetroPark for a free pancake breakfast then head to work. Live music, cycling related exhibitors and team challenge are also part of the fun. Turn this one day into a lifesyle.

Women's Cycling Fundamentals - May 16
Prior to rides, we’ll talk about safety, proper body positioning, and cycling etiquette on bikeways and bike lanes. Bikes need to be in good condition. Helmets required. Registration required. Fee: $15.

Bike for the Health of It: Ride to Verona - May 16
Join us for a bike ride, rain or shine, on the Wolf Creek Bikeway. Meet in the parking lot behind Rob's Restaurant, 705 Arlington Rd., in Brookville. We will ride toward Verona (11 miles), 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Miami Valley Cycling Summit - May 29
The Miami Valley Cycling Summit aims to use the power of cycling to drive economic development in communities both large and small throughout the region. This year's theme is "Cycling Cultivates." Join us in Piqua, Ohio. Find out more and register at

Miamisburg River Ride - May 30
Grab your bike and hop on the River Ride. Riders will begin at Miamisburg at Riverfront Park, 3 N. Miami Ave. and head south to Franklin, 14 miles round trip. Along the way, enjoy Great Miami River vistas, shady parks, provided refreshments and historic points of interest. Win sweet prizes, get a bike helmet (while supplies last) and have a great time! Join us on a bike ride, rain or shine, on the Great Miami River Bikeway (north). Meet in the parking lot at Rip Rap Park, at the intersections of Little York, Rip Rap and Taylorsville roads. We will ride to Island MetroPark (15 miles), 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Bike to the Dragons - May 31
Hop on your bike with the family and head downtown to watch America's favorite pastime. The first 50 cyclists to register on the Dragon's Website and "Bike to the Game" will win complimentary lawn seats and a pack of prizes courtesy of Five Rivers MetroParks, Dayton Dragons, and the Miami Valley Regional Planning Committee. Valet Bike Parking will be available for those who Bike to the Dragons starting at 1:00 pm. Game time is 2:00 pm. Bicycles must be claimed no later than 30 minutes after the last pitch.
