Backpacking involves hiking into the “backcountry” to spend one or more nights camping
away from a vehicle and other luxuries. A backpacker carries all of his supplies
and equipment in a backpack to provide his own shelter, food and basic needs or
the means to obtain them. A backpacking trip must include at least one overnight
stay in the backcountry, otherwise we consider the trip a day hike.
