What's it like to actually live and work in Antarctica?

Simone Broughton, seasoned traveler and adventurer, will be hosting a presentation about her contract job at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. She spent 6 months during the austral winter (think "no sun"!) living a life many either envy or misunderstand, but few will get to experience. When she wasn’t washing dishes, she spent her time on the Ice hiking and skiing.

Come and discover life on the Ice – from the surreal beauty and intense camaraderie to the effects of extreme isolation, depression and insomnia that plague “winter-overs”.

Born and raised in Northeast Ohio, Simone Broughton has lived on 5 continents, travelled to numerous countries, learned to speak 2 foreign languages and has experienced a life that few Midwesterners could imagine.  Beyond the chicken buses and rickety trains, her travels have always involved some element of adventure – from a triathlon in Canada, to completing the MidWinter 5k Run in Antarctica in -50F temps, to bicycling solo across northern Europe.  And yet this Midwesterner maintains that nothing was as compelling and gratifying as spending an austral winter washing dishes in Antarctica!
Simone has returned to her Ohio roots and currently works in Disaster Relief with the Red Cross in Cincinnati, OH.
