PRESENTER PROFILE:
Presenter: Allen Johnson
Presentation: Biking the Blue Ridge Parkway with Five Granddaughters
Back to presentation schedule
This summer, Allen and his five granddaughters biked the 469-mile length of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The 5-year-old rode on a tag-along attached to Allen’s bike while the older granddaughters rode their own bikes as they pedaled 50 miles per day for 10 days. They stopped to photograph deer, wild turkeys, fox and skunks; waded in Otter Creek; explored Mill Mountain zoo; walked through Natural Bridge rock arch; visited an Indian village and toured the Biltmore Estates. The best part for Allen was spending time with his granddaughters.
Allen Johnson grew up leading a quiet life of sand-lot baseball, fishing, camping, and day-dreaming. After college he realized he could live out his early day-dreams. His job as a communications engineer with the US Air Force gave him an opportunity to travel. In the past 50 years, Allen has flown over 5 million miles and visited 50 countries. He has chased polar bears across the Canadian Arctic, ridden camels across the Australian Outback, and bicycled to the Arctic Circle. Allen has even found time to write 12 adventure travel books.
