PRESENTER PROFILE:

Presenter:  Lance Smith
Presentation:  Hiking Safely in Rocky Mountain National Park
Back to presentation schedule

Anyone who loves the outdoors knows the Rockies have some of the best hikes in the world.  What many people do not think about are the dangers hidden within the beauty.  In addition to obvious things like terrain and wild animals, many “Easterners” forget about such pitfalls as extreme altitude change and weather.  Realizing there is a problem at 10,000 is not a good situation, and could mean the difference between life and death.  This presentation will discuss one man’s first-hand experience with altitude sickness while hiking the Fern Lake trail in May of 2011.

Lance Smith is a technical professional, father of two, and outdoor enthusiast.  He has hiked and backpacked many areas of the country, and been to such parks as Yosemite NP, Zion NP, and Chugach State Park in Alaska.  He is also an amateur photographer and loves taking scenic shots.  When he’s not spending time at work, writing code, or sleeping in a tent, he’s spending time nurturing a love for the outdoors with his twin boys.
