Presentation: Invasive Species: Causes and Prevention in Outdoor Recreation

There has been lots of talk in recent years about the onslaught of invasive speicies in our natural areas.   Sometimes, even with our best intentions to “leave what you find”, we all contribute to this growing (pun intended) concern.  In this session we will identify and learn more about some of the most common invasive species in the Eastern woodlands and meadows; what these speicies are doing to the natural areas we enjoy; how outdoor recreationalist contribute to the collection and spread of invasive speicies; and tips, tricks, and opportunities to help remove and prevent  their further spread and endangerment to our wildlands. 

Douglas Wagoner is owner and chief guide at Green Earth Outdoors, a sustainable adventure travel company, outdoor retailer, and outdoor training provider based in Louisville, Kentucky.   Gaining experience and a respect for the outdoors at a very young age, Douglas has been sharing his outdoor knowledge with others for most of his life. A professional guide since 1991, he has lead numerous backpacking, canoeing and climbing expedition throughout the US to many of our country’s most unique natural treasures, sharing with others his deep passion for responsible recreation. He is a Leave No Trace Master Educator Instructor, a Wilderness First Responder, an American Canoe Association Canoe Instructor/Trip Leader, and a certified Environmental Educator and has been nationally recognized for his outdoor ethics and conservation efforts.
