in the coming years.

Kelly
Kingery
(937) 279-6973
kkingery@metroparks.org
Outdoor
Experiences
Kelly grew up on a farm in north-central Ohio and from loving the life that entailed,
to traipsing around in the woods with her three brothers, father and grandfather,
she could not help but fall in love with everything wild and wonderful. Her family
helped teach her the savvy ways of the woods and always camped every summer in the
White Mountains where she was born.
Kelly found her experience in the natural world to be a great asset as she began
to dabble in climbing, hiking and rafting. She was the oldest to graduate at
Mountain River Tours (now Adventures Mountain River) as a whitewater river
guide in the class of 2000, earning the “Older than Dirt” award at age 38. Her incentive
to graduate was a guaranteed spot, one out of 20, on a 225 mile, private eight raft
trip in the Grand Canyon. “The Canyon definitely is one of the most defining moments
of my life. It left a mark on me that will never go away. It took a Greenie and
made a true boatman out of me. I am one of the truly blessed.”
From there, her love of the river continued to grow and, through changing circumstances,
Kelly found herself falling in love with kayaking. “It’s such a personal thing.
Just you, and your boat, and the water. You are the captain of your own vessel and
in such a more intimate way. It’s amazing! I plan on getting my
American Canoe Association instructor certification this spring so that
I will be able to help other people have this same experience.”
Speaking of changing circumstances, Kelly now lives with her wonderful husband,
John, on their farm outside of Farmersville. They are raising a few Nubian goats,
registered Polled Herefords and alpacas. And, of course, there’s the barn cats.
Stop by and pick one out anytime (the cats, that is).
Experience in the Outdoor Industry
Having worked jobs ranging from construction to office work, exotic animal handler
to John Deere parts specialist, Kelly started working for Five Rivers MetroParks
in 2002. “I’ve been a horticulture technician at Cox Arboretum & Gardens
MetroPark , thanks to gardening chores my mother had us kids do. I’ve been
a land stewardship technician thanks to my dad having me out in the fields on the
tractor, hunting in the woods and studying animal behavior. I’ve loved all the aspects
of each job. But here at Five Rivers Outdoors I feel most in my element. And we're
still about conservation, education, recreation and sustainability, the Mission
of Five Rivers MetroParks."
Working With Five Rivers Outdoors
Five Rivers Outdoors is such an exciting program to Kelly. "It’s a new, innovative
initiative that can bring real excitement to the region. It’s great to be part of
something that can have that kind of impact on people’s lives. Connecting folks
to the natural resources right here at home. Helping them see natural treasures
in a new light, helping them take ownership and hopefully creating a pride and protective
quality for their future."
