Woodman Fen Update Remediation continues on the recently acquired 37-acre tract west of Woodman Drive in East Dayton. This old bog, or alkaline fen, was used for agriculture and dumping for many years before MetroParks took ownership in 2007. With the garbage and rubble hauled away, naturalists have discovered new signs of old life in “Woodman Fen.”
By simply providing sunlight and air to seeds of original species deeply buried under the peat and waste. Plant life has started a comeback. Park staff will continue their restoration through 2008 while construction of a boardwalk and trails through the wetlands is completed. We hope to open Woodman Fen to the general public in May of 2009.
Species Found: Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris), Ravensfoot sedge (Carex crus-corvi), ellow water-cup (Ranunculus flabellaris)
