Presentation:  Using your Wilderness First Responder Skills Abroad; Stories from an International Outward Bound Instructor
Back to presentation schedule

This presentation will talk about the challenges that accompany adventure travel abroad, especially to developing countries, and the need to improvise when using certain trained skills, like the Wilderness First Responder.  The presenter will provide a detailed account of a 90-day, college student, course she led in three different countries throughout Central and South America including the climatic evacuation that needed to be carried out in the last weeks of the program.  Participants will learn about how the structure of the course and the background of the instructor set the group up for success when faced with a serious situation in a remote region of Ecuador.  This session will include plenty of time for participants to ask questions and have discussion that will also help prepare them for adventure travel in developing countries and the unexpected challenges that come with it.

Leslie King is the Coordinator of the Rivers Institute and River Stewards Program at the University of Dayton.  Prior to UD, Leslie spent four years as the Assistant Director of Antioch Education Abroad, where she worked closely with program staff and faculty from the eight study abroad programs to manage safety and risk management in countries like Brazil, India and Mali.   Leslie earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from West Virginia University with a major in Environmental Protection and Natural Resource Management.  During her undergraduate career, Leslie joined two faculty members and then the Mountain Institute on a series of four comparative study abroad programs in Malaysia, Borneo, the Peruvian Andes and Nepal.  While studying abroad, Leslie examined best practices in wildlife management and protected area management, and looked at the cultural and environmental impacts of eco-tourism, particularly in Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park.  These experiences prepared her for the two years she worked with the Costa Rica Outward Bound School, leading students on 15 to 90 day programs focused on environmental education, cultural immersion, service, personal and group development and outdoor leadership skills.  Currently, Leslie is working on her Masters Degree in Public Administration at UD.
